More than 100 specific projects are named in the UKTI report Asian ‘smart cities’ co-inciding with the UKTI Explore Asia conference including Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Inflation Lowest Since March 2010

Retail price wars helped to drive down the cost of clothing, furniture and electrical goods in January compared to January 2011. Food and non-food prices combined to drive overall shop price inflation down to 1.4 per cent in January from 1.7 per cent in December, the lowest since March 2010. Non-food inflation fell to zero from 0.3% in December. The fall in shop price inflation reflected broader price trends, with the annual rate of inflation expected to fall sharply in 2012. Thousands of London 2012 volunteers and employees are gathering on Saturday’s for the “milestone” event in the build-up to the Olympics – their first orientation and training event. Sessions attended by 10,000 at Wembley Arena, are taking place over three dates in February. The events provide an introduction to the heritage and importance of the Games as well as an insight into what working at London 2012 will be like, including the sports, venues and the roles. National Apprenticeship Week launched by Business Secretary Vince Cable, one of many hundreds of events and activities involving thousands of employers and learners planned during Apprenticeship Week. The 2012 National Apprenticeship week is the fifth annual celebration of vocational skills in Britain. The release of figures shows a national rise in the number of apprenticeship starts across England in the academic year 2010-2011. This amounts to a total of 457,200 apprenticeships starts – an increase of 63.5 per cent on 2009/10. The Make it in Great Britain Challenge is open to inventors, manufacturers, engineers, designers, businesses of all sizes, young people and the general public. It forms part of the Make it in Great Britain campaign, which aims to change the image of modern manufacturing. The winning entries from each category will showcase their creations on a weekly basis at the Make it in Great Britain exhibition at the Science Museum in London, which will coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.
